9-11 A Day to be Grateful

Maybe that headline puzzles you. Perhaps you're thinking, "Are you kidding? 9-11 was an infamous day in U.S. history." The September 11 attacks  were a series of coordinated terrorist attacks against the United States on the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001. The attacks killed 2,996 people, injured over 6,000 others, and caused at least $10 billion in infrastructure and property damage. Additional people died of 9/11-related cancer and respiratory diseases in the months and years following the attacks.

So how could I possibly say this is a day to be grateful?

Because even though terrible things happened on 9-11, even worse things were planned. Major damage to Washington D.C., and destruction on both the east and west coasts were intended. Heroes on the planes fought the terrorists and sacrificed themselves so other lives could be spared. When leaders realized what was happening all U.S. flights were cancelled, preventing further attacks. Instead of just focusing on what we lost, let's be grateful for what we didn't lose.

Dear reader, when you look upon some of the darkest days of your life, realize it could've been much worse. We may never know what we've been spared from. The fact that you're still here, moving forward, means you're a survivor.

Just as 9-11 taught us how to thwart several terrorist attacks, we've all gone through difficult  experiences that taught important life lessons. We learned who not to trust, we learned what was right for us by experiencing what was wrong. At times our enemies are counting on us to be cowards, to give up, to surrender easily. The fact that you are reading this lets me know you are not one to be counted out. On this day, let's be grateful for all we have, and all we still have to gain.
